Creative Writing Thread

This is the thread for everyone to post their work. You should pick a famous Western/English fairy tale or fable and alter it to make it your own. You may want to consider fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen or one of Aesop’s fables. To make the story your own, you may choose to set the story in a place familiar to you or it may involve that you change the plot. You may imagine new characters or you may . replace the characters from the original work with characters from your own life. All of these choices are completely up to you. You should all aim to write at least 300 words but you may write as much as you like.

To post your writing, simply reply to this post. When you do so, please include the title of the fairy tale/fable you are referencing in the title of your post along with the title of your piece. For example “The Tortoise and the Hare: The Little Engine that Could”. Finally, be sure to sign your post with your name and class day/period for example “Nathan Tues 1-2”. If you are writing an ending to a story you may want to quickly provide the main points in the story leading up to the time you start your version.

Once you have posted your version, you are not finished! Please take time to read things that your classmates have written. You are all required to post a THOUGHTFUL response to at least 2 other pieces of writing. A thoughtful response is more than just saying, “I like this, good job!” You should explain why you hold your views. Although you may be critical of others writing, please remember that we are all working on our writing together it takes a lot of courage for anyone to share so be RESPECTFUL. You can post a review by clicking “reply” to post you would like to respond to.

I will post a piece later this week. I look forward to reading what you all have in your imaginations!

  1. New frog prince
    ——Adapted from The Frog Prince
    129 Olivia
In a remote but rich kingdom, there lived a King, whose daughters were all beautiful; but the youngest was so exceedingly beautiful that the most delicate rose would be ashamed every time the princess showed up.
However, the little princess was bored with life in the palace, instead, playing with her mobile phone was her greatest amusement every day. The king was afraid that the princess was addicted to the mobile phone and be ignorant of everything else, so he secretly asked the maid to monitor the princess in case she  played with the mobile phone excessively. But the clever princess already knew that and went to a secret garden, which is known to nobody else, to play the mobile phone freely.
One day, accidentally, the phone fell into the well which was so deep that she could not see to the bottom. Since there was nobody she could turn to if she wanted to keep this place secret, she became to lament, and to cry more loudly. Seeing all this, a frog jumped out and said he could help fetching it, but in exchange, the princess should play with him for three days, and on the last night he would return the phone to the princess. The princess agreed kind of resentfully ,since there was no other way.
The first day, without the mobile phone at hand, the princess sat uneasily. When the frog was talking, she was always distracted, and from time to time in the heart cursed the frog for he did not give back her phone immediately.
The second day, things changed a little. When the princess racked her brains and tried to solve a mathematical problem, the frog came up and worked it out easily. Then he explained his solution to the princess patiently, and the princess was suddenly enlightened. She happily said ”Wahoo, no longer worry about being bald!”. The frog smiled gently ”You are much more clever than I thought. ” For the first time the princess thought study wasn’t that boring, and for the first time the frog looked not that ugly.
The third day, the princess and frog began to chat, chat about study and entertainment, interests and hobbies, life and dreams. To their both surprise, their perspectives of the world were so fit. The frog asked the princess, ”Your mother got married when she was 20 years old, why are you still single being 24?”The princess responded that she was tired of the royal formalities and wanted a true love to live a free life with her. Frog joked himself, ”I want to find a girlfriend willing to accompany me to live a simple and happy life, too, but, no volunteers” The two laughed loudly, and the princess said, ”Clown frog, you’re pretty cute.”
Late in the evening, it was time for the frog to fulfill his promise. The frog said, ”Little princess, your math problem is too easy for me. And you have the capacity to fix it already. Now, I’d like to leave here to find my unknown girlfriend, goodbye. “Said, the frog threw the phone to the princess, ready to turn away.
“Wait, please” said the princess. ”what if I want to be that person? “The princess went up and kissed the frog in the face. Like a magic, the frog turned into a handsome prince! The princess was extremely surprised. Then the frog prince explained the whole process to her. The prince was an excellent student who couldn’t stop doing exercises every day. One day his teacher gave him a test paper. He soon finished it except the last one because there was only a set of functions without any question shown. He felt strange and asked the teacher. The teacher who was actually a wizard looked at him and said,” You have to find the answer yourself. “With these words, the prince became a frog. The frog prince did not give up solving the question, he connected all the answers of the first nine questions, and found that it was actually a location in a neighboring country, so he found his way to here, and saw the princess who played mobile phone every day. “So what is the answer?” the princess asked. The prince smiled, took out the test paper  and drew down the graph according to the functions, which ultimately joined into a heart. “It’s love.” They said simultaneously.
From then on, the princess was no longer hooked on the mobile phone, and the prince is no longer addicted to learning, they cherish each other, accompany their family, and live a happy life forever.

    1. What a lovely story! It’s still a story about love but connects with something we knew like the “loving heart” gragh, which makes it more humorous! And the little frog and its princess were so cute. I love them.

    2. What a funny story it is! The characteristics of the prince and the princess are so cute! One seems to be the kind of people admired by all the students, the Xueba, which means the king in study. And the other seems to be one of us, so addicted to the phone that can’t notice other beautiful things in real life. Fortunately, the two kinds of people met and fell in love with each other. Surely the story taught us a good lesson to balance the study and entertainment. In addition, the story has used the literary device, that is personification, even the rose can feel ashamed of the princess’ beauty.

  4. The Three Little Men in the Wood: Three Good Wishes and Bad Wishes
The King thought that the girl was poor but had a kind heart. He wanted to marry her. So she was handed into the carriage, and driven away with the King, and as soon as they arrived at his castle the wedding was celebrated with great splendor, as the Dwarfs had granted to the maiden. After a year the young queen bore a son and she couldn’t be more satisfied. One day, when she was reading fairy tales to her child, her experience with three dwarfs suddenly crowded into her mind. She realized that maybe her good luck was related to those lovely dwarfs. “If it was they who helped me in the past, I must go back to express my gratitude.” she thought. She immediately told her husband the details and they set off the next morning, taking their son along with them.
They found the original forest easily and the queen met three dwarfs as she expected. “Do you remember me?I‘m the poor girl you once helped. Now I have been married to the King and we have a son. And I’m coming back to appreciate you all.” said the queen. “You are such a kindhearted girl and you deserve this.” three dwarfs replied in one voice,” Please give your son to us and we will also bless him.” The King and Queen gladly consented. Then said the first, “I grant to him that he shall become more handsome every day.” The second said, “I grant that a jewel shall fall out of his eyes for every time he cries.” The third said, “I grant that he shall marry the most beautiful and kind girl in the future.” The King and Queen suggested that take three dwarfs to their palace and treat them cordially. However, they refused. They explained that the forest was their home so they didn’t want to leave. Therefore, the Queen bought many kinds of seeds and helped beautify the forest.
A few years later, when the little prince came to the forest, the hare came to eat parsley from his hands. The deer gazed by his side. The stag bounded past him unheedingly and the birds sang their welcome songs. Being bathed in the golden rays of the morning sun, the whole forest seems to be the fairyland. And he knew that all of these came from kindness and love.

  5. Rapunzel:Never judge a man by his appearance.
    Lizzie (Nathan Mon.3-4)

Once upon a time there was a man and a woman who are poor and avidly wanted money. One day, when they took a walk after dinner, they happened to come across a sorceress. It is a woman with great power, and she said,” today is my birthday, I am so happy that can realize one of your wishes, however, as you can see, I have no child. So no matter what your wish is, you should give your child to me in return.”The worlds lit up the couple, they settled the deal immediately.”There are a kind of man who will do everything for money even if it is to sell their child? What a ghastly humanity!” the sorceress said to herself.
A year later, a loud cry burst out. The woman gave birth to a little cute infant. Also, as the sorceress’s request, they give the baby to her.The sorceress named her Rapunzel and when she became 17 years old, she became the most beautiful girl under the sun. To shelter Rapunzel from being hurt by the beast or the mob, the sorceress locked her at the top of a tower in the forest and that had neither a door nor a stairway, but only a tiny little window at the very top. Ever time when the sorceress wanted to enter, she stood below and called out: Rapunzel Rapunzel, let down your hair to me. When she heard the voice, she untied her braids, wound them around a window hook, let her hair fall 20 yards to the ground, and sorceress could climb up.
A few years later it happened that a prince was riding through the forest. As he approached the tower, he heard a song so beautiful that he stopped to listen. It was Rapunzel who was passing time by singing with her sweet voice. He never heard a song more touching than this, he just couldn’t help to call out loud:”May I please to know who is singing this beautiful song?” Few minutes later, a “hair stair” rolling down from the top of the tower. The prince climbed up so avidly, and he was shocked by her pretty face. “Would you marry me, pretty lady?” the prince asked. “Yes!” Rapunzel also fall in love with the prince because of his handsome appearance.
During the rest of that day, Rapunzel was dancing like a butterfly and smiling like a flower.”Why are you so happy today my dearest child?” asked by the sorceress
”I am engaged with a handsome prince!”
“What? How long have you know him?”
    “Just today!”
“Listen, Rapunzel, you should not get to know a man in just one day and should not judge a person by his or her appearance.”
However, the Rapunzel was in love and refused to take the sorceress’s advice into consideration. She chose one day and run away with the prince.
Rapunzel never went to a palace before, everything she did was considered not appropriate. She is pure enough but she is also vulgar enough. Beside that, the prince already had 12 wives who are either beautiful or elegant enough. After a few month, the prince get sick of Rapunzel. She is like a dumb blond in his eyes, and he exiled her. The sad Rapunzel came back to the town and tried to find her real parents. They were still poor and shock to see her again. The couple had a quilck eye contact and welcomed their child and prepare the dinner. However, Rapunzel felt dizzy after dinner and laid in a coma. Her parents sold Rapunzel to a brothel for money.
Thinking back the old days, Rapunzel knowed that it is only sorceress that is really care for her. She finally knowed that what is the true meaning of “never judge a man by it’s appearance.”

    1. Sounds like a dark fairy tale hahaha. But I think it is not only judging by appearance but also ignorance, which was caused by having being locked for a lot of time that led to such ending. Long live the sorceress:)

  6. The Bottle Neck
Adapted from the The Bottle Neck by Andersen
When the bottle broke into small pieces and a bottle neck, it never thought of meeting its former owner, who is now an old maid. Nor did it know it will somehow become a space traveler a number of years later.
The many small pieces were cleaned and buried in the ground. There they slept, with the touching of the gentle soil. In their long time of sleeping, they could barely feel the wars breaking out on the ground, the deadly natural disasters above and the end of human civilization. They just stayed in deep underground, waiting to be degraded into substance that used to form them. And the day came, after so many years of separating from the bottle neck, the pieces became part of the soil in the hopeless planet.
While the Bottle Neck had a totally different experience. As it was kept on the ground, it witnessed the dusk of civilization on earth. its creators ended up being destroyed by greedy and harm. The earth once again became a desperate place, but that didn’t upset the Bottle Neck, for it was just an object which happened to have its thought. Then came the very day out of the countless days when a group of travels from another more advanced galaxy reached earth in their spacecraft. They were excited to find the existence of another intelligent creatures, and they carried everything they could in the spacecraft, including our old bottle neck. Kept inside a protective box, the Bottle Neck could glance the view of all the stars and things that no one had ever seen before, though the glass of the spacecraft. The Bottle Neck though every second in the spacecraft was better than the time back on earth. At least, there were something fresh every day, rather than waiting meaninglessly in ruins.
However, greed and harm never disappear, even in a group of creatures with high technology like these travels. A splendid star war took place among the galaxies, in the outer space, inside the planets, the reason for which wasn’t understood by the Bottle Neck. All we have to know is that the spacecraft where it’s in was destroyed during a battle. Every lift inside was unable to flee. Only our Bottle Neck survived. It floated in the outer space, passing the battlefields on fire. It had never seen a planet burning like a firework illuminating the universe. It kept floating, and time became meaningless. The Bottle Neck fell into another long sleep. It was by the time it passed Mars that the Bottle Neck finally woke up, for a feeling of acquaintance came into being.
After countless years of traveling, it was back in the solar system. Hardly could it remember this place. Nevertheless, it waited for something to happen. It thought of destiny when it stared at earth, the planet that it once called home. And it understood what fate means at the very moment when it burned up in the atmosphere. Death was too quick to be noticed for an old battle neck like it. Nor did it know some simple creatures came from nowhere again in the sea, thanks to the magic of the universe.

    Cinderella
The prince finally found his real bride Cinderella. They both loved each other deeply and lived a sweet life filled with happiness. The prince viewed Cinderella as his only wife and the most beautiful princess in the whole world. Within two years, they have a healthy and really lovely son. Soon later, the prince inherited his father’s position and became the new king. The king and queen were so kind and did so many things from which people benefited a lot that the kingdom became more and more prosperous, and its people admired them very much. Everything seemed peaceful and bright and would last for ever until another country, its neighbor, crossed national borders, looted people’s belongings and even killed their lives. This was overt aggression against their country. In order to defend their country and people, the couple decided to beat back. The war began.
The king led the armies in person and always rushed to the forefront bravely. Though the king once prevented his queen from entering the battlefield, Cinderella insisted she come for she was unwilling to see people getting injured but do nothing. She brought the bird with her to save those who got hurt. How she wished she could save more people, save their country! The king and queen were both trying their best to deliver people from sufferings. They loved each other as well as their country. Their love supported them to believe, that the war would eventually end and they would won.
“With your company, I’m not afraid of anything.” They said to each other.
However, this war was a conspiracy. The evil country invented a kind of chronic poison which had no antidote. They rubbed it on the arrows and shot them at the good country. One unfortunate night, an arrow went straight to Cinderella who was busy saving a wounded soldier at a high speed. At this serious moment, the king rushed forward without any hesitation. He would never let his queen suffer even a little pain, just as he had promised. He hugged his queen so tightly. A heavy strike. He still wanted to say something, but was out of consciousness gradually. He didn’t know the arrow pierced his body and punctured his queen’s skin, didn’t know whether he could see her again. Cinderella was extremely shocked so that she couldn’t stop shivering with her tears streaming down the cheek.
The night was so silent and so dark, as if dawn would not come anymore. Cinderella waked up after a while but the king didn’t. His injures were too severe. Cinderella couldn’t be more sorrowful and wept for several hours. She didn’t know what to do. That’s who would rather sacrifice himself than see her lose life! He saved her! He was dying! Cinderella looked at her beloved man, determined to save him.
“Little bird! Little bird!” she called. Then the magical little bird appeared. Cinderella told all the things to the little bird. “Help me! We are poisoned and he is dying! I beg you, save us, please?” She cried. The bird replied, “Two little poor…you know, this poison has no antidote. I really would like to save you both. But…the only way is that i die and then get ONE pill which can make a person live forever and never die. So I’m sorry to…” “Save him!” she blurted out, “he can save all people, but all l can do is save him……but…you will die, so sorry for that and thank you.” The little bird was so moved and she was shining and then, a bright pill.
Cinderella took the pill carefully and fed it to the king. Gradually, the king came to life. As soon as he opened his eyes and saw his tearful wife, he couldn’t helping weeping tears for he knew his queen gave him the only antidote. Cinderella used up her last bit of energy and fell into deep sleep in his arms, smiling. The king choked with sobs, couldn’t believe his queen left him forever. He was so sad . However, he couldn’t give up. He knew that he should live with Cinderella’s everlasting love and save his country. Finally, he won. He protected his country and people successfully. The only regret was loss of his beloved. He always wanted to make up.
Eventually, the king passed his position to his son. He himself carried the bone ash of Cinderella all the time, traveling the country they saved together, from the south to the north. Every time he arrived somewhere, no matter which season, various flowers would burst into bloom. Then he knew: my lady come.

  8. One hot summer day a fox was walking through an orchard. He stopped before a bunch of grapes. They were ripe and juicy.
“I’m just feeling thirsty,” he thought. So, he backed up a few paces, got a running start, jumped up, but could not reach the grapes.
He walked back. One, two, three, he jumped up again, but still, he missed the grapes.
The fox tried again and again, but never succeeded. At last he decided to give it up. He walked away with his nose in the air, and said, “I am sure they are sour.”
“A vain creature,” a monkey saw him and sneered.
“What do you know about it?”, the fox said, “that’s the science of grapes and I wouldn’t excepted that you such a fool could understand it.”
“Well, so you’re teasing me again!”, the monkey replied, “look at the grape, completely juicy ang I bet it’s already ripe.”
“Too naive!”, answered the fox, “I put forward a kind of new pattern of high photo effect training-‘FI tree form’, after many years of investigation into production and scientific experiments, aiming to solve the current problems that lie in training and pruning of greenhouse grape.”
“I’ve studied grapes for many years.”, the fox said, “no one would know more about grapes. I am sensitive to the smell of grapes and I can tell whether the grapes are suitable for eat just by the appearance.”
“And now I can promise to you that the grapes, are SOUR”, the fox said earnestly.
“You are the fool! Not me……” the little monkey roared and tried to scratch the fox. But suddenly the monkey’s mother appeared and stopped him.
“You owe our distinguished Mr. Fox an apology. You must have found your attitude very annoying!” the Mother Monkey accused his son.
“But mom! He is a ‘hollow sham’! you look at the grapes and no one can believe the grapes are unripe! They are just too high to get for foxes.”
“Shut up! What you’ve said is offending and you must make an apology to Mr. Fox! I trustily believe that the grapes are too unripe to eat.”
“But mom, you didn’t taste it and how you know that?”
“I absolutely believe in Mr. Fox. Because He has attended many international or national seminars and has published many learned articles. No one would know more about grapes than him.” Mother Monkey said.
“I bet they are sour.” The fox swaggered away with full pride on his face.
The little monkey was still dubious about the “sour” grapes and he climbed on the trellis by himself and picked a string of grapes, then he tasted it.
“The grapes are too sweet!” he said surprisingly.

  9. LITTLE SNOW WHITE
We all know the story of Snow White, today we would like to see another version of it. Let’s start from the plot after Snow White ate that poisoned apple:
When evening came, and the dwarfs returned home, they found Snow White lying on the ground; no breath passed her lips. Then all the dwarfs knew that she must had opened the door and be cheated by the queen again. They were very angry. The first said, “Why did she never take our advice?” The second, “Why does she still have no awareness of protecting herself after being hurt?” The third, “Perhaps at the beginning we should not let her stay here.” The fourth, “That’s right. I totally agree!” The fifth, “We have saved her so many times!” The sixth replied, “Yes, and what she did just made our efforts in vain.” The seventh, “After all, let’s make our effort to save her for the last time.” His brothers agreed. They lifted her up, combed her hair, and washed her face with wine and water; but all was in vain. The seventh dwarf said in grief, “This is her destiny, and we have done our best.” Everyone was in silence when the third suddenly called out: “I’ve got it! In our basement there is a book left by our father. Maybe it will be of use.”
To everyone’s surprise, the book records a similar story, in which the princess was eventually saved by a prince passing by and they lived a happy life ever after. So all the dwarfs kept waiting for the prince. On the fourth day, a prince came up as expected. After hearing the story, the prince said soberly, “I am willing to save her life, but you should never expect me to marry her.” The dwarfs wondered why: “She has skin as white as snow, hair as black as ebony and lips as red as rose! What a pretty girl she is!” He answered, “Yes, she is definitely the most beautiful maid I have ever seen. But after being warned and slain, she still made the same mistake for three times. She is such a silly girl that cannot even take care of herself! How can I expect her to be the queen of my kingdom?”
He saved Snow White according to what the book says. She woke up, feeling sorry for her carelessness. The prince left. Snow White kept living with the dwarfs ever after. She soon became a writer and published a book for girls all around the world, which is about how to protect themselves.

  10. The Little Match Girl
The little girl struck the rest of the matches against the wall. Through the bright light she saw her grandmother. The teardrops fell down from her eyes just like a string of pearls. The happiness and sadness filled her heart at the same time. With the strongly emotional crashing, she fainted in the white snow…
When she woke up, she found herself lying on a soft bed. The bed was so comfortable that made the poor girl feel like in the hug of her grandma. She got up, walked out of the room and found that there was a couple eating dinner which was the same as what she saw through the burning match. The woman noticed the girl and said, “come here, my poor sweetheart”. The girl walked slowly and cautiously. It was obvious that she didn’t know why she was in this big and warm house. The hostess explained that they didn’t have any child but want to have one, so when they found the poor girl lying in the snow helplessly, they brought her to their house. The poor girl was not poor any more because she had a new family.
During the next 20 years, the girl lived happily with her foster parents. She went to the school and got the diploma of Literature. She put the experience about her miserable childhood into her fairy book. The story just like an arrow shot into everyone’s heart and made everyone moved. She become a famous writer.
After her foster parents passed away, she inherited their wealth and set up an orphanage. More and more poor children came and got together in the orphanage. She treated every child kindly and patiently like her grandma. The children called her “ the great nanny” and thanked for what she did.
At the age of 98, she closed her eyes forever, with the accompany of her adapted children. Her smile stayed in everyone’s heart and warmed the world like the sun.

  11. Fox and horse
A peasant had a faithful horse which had grown old and could do no more work, so his master no longer wanted to give him anything to eat and said, “I can certainly make no more use of you, but still I mean well by you, and if you prove yourself still strong enough and bring me a lion here, I will maintain you. But for now get out of my stable.” And with that he chased him into the open field.
The horse was sad, and went to the forest to seek a little protection there from the weather. There the fox met him and said, “Why do you hang your head so, and go about all alone?”
“Alas,” replied the horse, “greed and loyalty do not dwell together in one house. My master has forgotten what services I have performed for him for so many years, and because I can no longer plow well, he will give me no more food, and has driven me out.”
“Without giving you a chance?” asked the fox.
“The chance was a bad one. He said, if I were still strong enough to bring him a lion, he would keep me, but he well knows that I cannot do that.”
The fox said, “I will help you. Just lie down, stretch out as if you were dead, and do not stir.”
The horse did what the fox asked, and then the fox went to the lion, who had his den not far off, and said, “A dead horse is lying out there. Just come with me, and you can have a rich meal.”
The lion went with him, and when they were both standing by the horse the fox said, “After all, it is not very comfortable for you here —— I tell you what —— I will fasten it to you by the tail, and then you can drag it into your cave and eat it in peace.”
This advice pleased the lion. He positioned himself, and in order that the fox might tie the horse fast to him, he kept completely quiet. But the fox tied the lion’s legs together with the horse’s tail, and twisted and fastened everything so well and so strongly that no amount of strength could pull it loose. When he had finished his work, he tapped the horse on the shoulder and said, “Pull, white horse, pull!”
Then up sprang the horse at once, and pulled the lion away with him. The lion began to roar so that all the birds in the forest flew up in terror, but the horse let him roar, and drew him and dragged him across the field to his master’s door. When the master saw the lion,he was surprised. But he knew that it’s impossible to catch the lion relying on the horse’s own strength.
So he said”Well, you have brought a lion back, but now I want to test if you are strong just like before.”So he untied the lion, and kept the lion and the horse together.
The horse was desperate, but the lion was moved by the loyalty of the horse forgave the horse for his disrespect. The lion pounced on the horse and pretended to fall. The master was so confused that he went closer to see what happened.Just then, the lion suddenly rushed up and killed the master.
After that, there was another loyal partner around the lion. And the fox was also respected by the animals for his wisdom.

The old king was so devastated that he couldn’t eat or sleep at night,a few days later,he was even too weak to say a word.”If we give him the water,we may never get the right to govern the country”,so the two older princes hid the water of life in the garden of the palace.Pretty soon the old king passed away. They felt relieved and glad, for noone has more power than them now.”Let me be the new king and you will be my best assistant!”said the oldest prince, seeing himself as the only fair inheriter of the country.”Of course,my dearest brother, let you be the greatest king ever.”the second prince smiled, with a brilliant idea coming up in his mind. The next morning, the second prince asked his brother:”My king, will I have the honor to have a nice lunch with you?””Sure,my best brother,we shall meet at noon, and I’ll prepare the best wine in advance.”When they separate, the second prince immediately told his closest maid:”I need you to secretly put this poison into the bottle of wine my brother prepared for himself.”However, what the second prince didn’t expect,is that his dear brother told his maid exactly the same thing,”he may threaten my power”,said the king will-be.
Finally, the lunch came, the two brothers were both nervous and excited, both expecting their own problem would be solved after the meal.”To our brotherhood”,they toasted, faking out the most genuine smile, and, drunk up all their wine.

  13. Meteor
It’s typical of a meteor to run around in circles for there are so many wishes to deal with, which are made by people from every corner of the world. It’s also typical of people to complain that wishes never come true, which may have come true just in a way people would never know.
An old meteor with ice-gray beard was walking slowly with tottering steps. He was about to retire, but before which he had to finish all of his unfinished job.
“Wow, the last two!” The old meteor thought to himself, looking into the two envelopes in his parcel, both of which have been there for more than 50 years. One interesting thing was that they seemed to be in pair.
He opened the pink one first, the letter inside saying “I want to see his brooding eyes again.”
He opened the blue one then, the letter inside saying “I want to see her sweet dimples again.”
“It seems to be a sad story.” He sighed, with kind of guilt, “It could not have been that bad if I had saw them earlier.” Then he cast a spell over these two letters with an immense effort, for he was quite old after all. “Sorry to you two, couples once young.” He said, “Good luck to me, a guy now retired!”
As a routine, all the young meteors will hold a farewell party for the retired one on its departing day. This time, it was not an exception. All shining meteors surged to the center of the night sky to celebrate their friend’s stepping into carefree retiring days. They sang and toasted, greeting each other with hug. They raised the old meteor high and threw him into sky.
People on the land looked up and shouted the wonder to each other with delight. They crowed onto the central square to catch a glimpse of the grand scenery, among whom there were an old lady with the apron tied on her waist and an old man with a little dog following him. They both walked slowly and peacefully through the noisy crowd, and eventually, brushed against each other, without greeting when bumping into the one haven’t met for decades, without looking around shoulder when passing by. It seemed that wrinkles time has caved in their faces made it hard for them to be recognized as what they used to be in their twenties.
Both of them thought:” I haven’t thought of anything could be grander than this!”
Yes, there is nothing grander than this.

A beautiful princess grown up in a peaceful country was going to marry a prince who lived a great way off. Her mother, the old queen, packed up a great many costly things that will make her a royal bride, then also gave her a waiting-maid and a groom. but the princess was still afraid because she had done nothing successful without the old queen ever before. so when the time came for them to set off, the old queen cut off a lock of her hair and gave it to her daughter. The old queen told her daughter that it was a charm that would protect the princess along the way just as the queen herself accompanied.
However, the waiting-maid chosen by the queen was indeed an evil person. She refused to serve the princess along the way, letting her drink water beside the river by herself. As she leaned down to drink, the lock of hair fell from her pocket and floated away with the water. When the evil waiting-maid found that the princess had lost the hair, she threatened the princess and got on the princess’ horse, pretending to be the bride. The princess was angry, but she could do nothing to the evil waiting-mate.
At last they came to the royal court. The prince accepted the maid as his wife without hesitation. But the real princess was arranged to take care of the king’s geese. The princess was very sad, but not only couldn’t she get in touch with any member of the royal family, but she didn’t know how to prove herself as the real princess. She also had to hide her blonde hair in order to avoid suspect, for the blonde hair was thought as a symbol of royal family members in ancient Europe. The only creature she could talk to was the horse called Falada which had accompanied her all the way from home. Every night she went to the groom to look after it and confided her sorrow to it.
One day, the false bride accidentally witnessed the night chat between the princess and Falada, which made her worried about the chat being overheard. So she told the Prince to kill the horse which her rode upon, for it plagued her all the way. The next day, a slaughter killed Falada and nailed its head against the gate of the Royal Palace. When the poor princess saw it when she returned from outside the city off the duty of taking care of the geese, she couldn’t stand it any longer. Although she had lost the lock of hair that her mother gave her, which was a charm that will give her courage while facing frustrations, she decided to prove herself in front of the king and the prince. After praying and asking her mother and Falada for help at night, she walked straight into the royal palace elegantly without hiding her blonde hair. She told the whole story to the astonished king on the throne. When royal clothes were put upon her, the old king gazed with wonder, she was so beautiful. Then the king called his son and told him that he had only the false bride, for she was merely a waiting-maid while the true one stood by. After hearing the princess’ story, the prince ordered a great feast to be prepared for all his court.
The bridegroom sat at the top with the false princess on one side and the true one on the other, but nobody knew her, for she was quite dazzling to their eyes and was not at all like the little goose girl, now that she had on her brilliant dress. When they had eaten and drunk and were very merry, the old king told all the story as one that he had once heard of and asked the true waiting-maid what she thought ought to be done to anyone who would behave this. “Nothing better,” said this false bride, “than that she should be thrown into a cask stuck around with sharp nails and that two white horses should be put to it and should drag it from street to street till she is dead.” “Thou art she!” said the old king; “and since thou hast judged thyself, it shall be so done to thee.”
After the evil waiting-maid was sentenced, the prince asked the beautiful princess to marry him. But the princess refused, she was no longer the timid girl who couldn’t express her own opinion. She said she would not marry a prince who couldn’t tell the difference between the real princess and a waiting-maid. The embarrassed prince and the ashamed king sent the princess back to her country and apologized sincerely. Since then, the princess continued to live in her home with her mother. Not long after that, she met her soul mate in destiny, which will be our story next time.

  16. Snow-White and The Dragon
It was in the middle of winter, when the broad flakes of snow were falling around, that a certain queen sat working at her window, the frame of which was made of fine black ebony; and, as she was looking out upon the snow, she pricked her finger, and three drops of blood fell upon it. Then she gazed thoughtfully down on the red drops which sprinkled the white snow and said, “Would that my little daughter may be as white as that snow, as red as the blood, and as black as the ebony window-frame!” And so the little girl grew up; her skin was white as snow, her cheeks as rosy as blood, and her hair as black as ebony; and she was called Snow-White.
But this queen died; and the king soon married another wife, who was very beautiful, but she was always upset, looking out of the window of the castle. She had a magical looking-glass, to which she used to go and gaze upon herself in it, and say—
“Tell me, glass. Of all the ladies in the land. Who is fairest? tell me who?”
And the glass answered, “Queen, you are the fairest in the land”
But Snow-White grew more and more beautiful; and when she was seven years old, she was as bright as the day, and fairer than the queen herself. Then the glass one day answered queen, when she went to consult it as usual—
“Queen, you are beautiful and fair. But Snow-White is lovelier far than you!”
When the queen heard this she turned pale with rage and envy; and calling to one of her servants said, “Take Snow White away into the wide wood, that I may never see her .” Then the servant led the little girl away; but Snow White understood the reason why she was in the forest, smiling quietly. The servant said sympathetically, “I will not hurt you, a pretty child.” So he left her there alone; and though he thought it most likely that the wild beasts would tear her to pieces, he felt as if a great weight were taken off his heart when he had made up his mind not to kill her, but leave her to her fate.
Snow-White was curious about the outside world, which was told by her mom, a poor queen yearn for freedom. In fact, she was a girl full of wisdom and courage. Many beasts roared around her, but no one hurt her. In the evening she came to a little cottage, and went in to rest, for her weary feet would carry her no further. Everything was spruce and neat in the cottage: on the table was spread a white cloth, and there were seven little plates with seven little loaves and seven little glasses with wine in them; and knives and forks laid in order, and by the wall stood seven little beds.
Then, as she was exceedingly hungry, she picked a little piece off each loaf, and drank a very little wine out of each glass; and after that she thought she would lie down and rest. So she tried all the little beds; and one was too long, and another was too short, till, at last, the seventh suited her; and there she laid herself down and went to sleep. Presently in came the masters of the cottage, who were seven little dwarfs that lived among the mountains, making living by digging gold and silver. And they always took adventures in the mountains. They lighted up their seven lamps, and saw directly that all was not right.
The first said, “Who has been sitting on my stool?”
The second, “Who has been eating off my plate?”
The third, “Who has been picking at my bread?”
The fourth, “Who has been meddling with my spoon?”
The fifth, “Who has been handling my fork?”
The sixth, “Who has been cutting with my knife?”
The seventh, “Who has been drinking my wine?”
Then the first looked around and said, “Who has been lying on my bed?” And the rest came running to him, and every one cried out that somebody had been upon his bed. But the seventh saw Snow-White, and called upon his brethren to come and look at her; and they cried out with wonder and astonishment, and brought their lamps and gazing upon her, they said, “Good heavens! what a lovely child she is!” And they were delighted to see her, and took care not to wake her up; and the seventh dwarf slept an hour with each of the other dwarfs in turn, till the night was gone.
In the morning Snow-White told them all her story, and they were delighted to know that she was fond of adventures, too. Also, Snow-White was willing to do cleaning for these kind dwarfs as they promised to take good care of her. Then they went out all day long to their work, seeking for gold and silver in the mountains; and Snow-White remained at home; and they warned her, saying, “The queen will soon find out where you are, so take care and let no one in.” But the queen, now that she thought Snow-White was dead, believed that she was certainly the most beautiful lady in the land; so she went to her glass and said—
“Tell me, glass, tell me true! Of all the ladies in the land,
Who is fairest? tell me who?”
    And the glass answered—
    “Queen, you are fairest in all this land;
But over the Hills, in the dark mountains, Snow-White is hiding where the seven dwarfs lived. And she is lovelier than you. ”
Then the queen was very much alarmed; for she knew that the glass always spoke the truth, and she was sure that the servant had betrayed her. But it struck her that on the deep dark mountains there was an evil dragon that satisfied others’ wishes at the cost of what they have. The queen sighed, “I have had experienced the pain of greed. After all, everyone has greedy desires. Snow-White is no different. I guess she will soon be punished by the dragon.”
In the evening, only six dwarfs returned in a hurry, with their eyes full of fear. Snow-White anxiously asked, “What’s wrong with you? Where is the seventh dwarf?”
The dwarfs told Snow-White, out of breath, “An evil dragon! The dragon and his cave was deep in the dark mountains. The seventh was caught by the dragon!”
Snow-White was curious. “Dragon? I haven’t seen a dragon before. Would you take me together to save the seventh? I really want to meet the dragon!”
“It’s too dangerous!” The dwarfs disagreed, “The dragon is cruel and aggressive. He will kill you!”
However, Snow-White still insisted on going with dwarfs to meet the dragon.
The next morning, Snow-White and six dwarfs went to the Dragon’s cave. When they came close to the cave, a heavy gale came on to blow, together with endless darkness. They were stuck in the storm, trying to identify the direction. Suddenly, a black scale shining silver blew in front of Snow-White. It was too small to be seen, but by coincidence it was found by the smart girl.
The black scale slowly flew ahead, seemed to direct Snow-White to somewhere. Through the dark fog, the girl followed the scale, with all the dwarfs following her. At the end of the path, a huge cave gradually revealed itself.
“It must be the evil dragon’s cave! The seventh must be inside!” The first dwarf shouted with excitement.
There was an enormous black dragon, with his scales shining silver. The dragon stretched upon the ground, as if he was asleep. At this moment, a weak whisper was heard behind the back of the dragon.
“Hey guys! I’m here! Help me please!” It was the seventh dwarf!
Snow-White was agile, so she tried slipping past the dragon to release the seventh. However, when the seventh ran away, he bumped into the dragon’s wings. Then, the dragon was waken up, staring at them angrily.
“Who allows you to release my prey?” The dragon bellowed.
Snow-White stood out, smiling at the dragon, “But you didn’t hurt him, did you?”
The dragon was silent for a while, “If you want to take him back, you should leave one person instead. Or you all cannot go out!”
“Ok, I leave here.” Snow-White answered.
The seven dwarfs were shocked, “Oh, Snow-White, you cannot leave here! The dragon is scary and he will drive you to death!”
“I’m not afraid. Take care dwarfs. I believe he won’t do harm to me. Because it is the dragon that led us to find the seventh.” She said confidently.
The dragon was confused, “I led you here? How come?”
“It’s your scale.” Snow-White said, with the black scale on her hand.
“If you have desires, I will help you achieve it. But it will cost your most valuable thing.” The dragon told the girl.
Snow-White thought for a while, “But I don’t have desires. I’m satisfied with my life.”
A person without greedy desires is what the dragon had never heard of. He was touched by the girl’s pure mind. So he carefully cleaned up the cave, in order to give a shelter to Snow-White.
“Well, you are not a bad dragon. But why you want to exchange things for people?” Snow-White asked, lying comfortably on the straws that the dragon put down for her.
The dragon sighed and said, “I am the prince of The Dragon Kingdom. But the prince of neighboring country cursed me, for the sake of their invasion of our kingdom.”
So the dragon cannot turn into a person. And he must stay in the mountains to wait the curse to be removed.
“In that case, maybe I can make friends with you, Mr. Dragon.” Snow-White tapped the horn of the dragon friendly.
In fact, Mr. Dragon was a humorous and gentle man. He picked up berries and fruits for Snow-White. Also, the wild flowers were common on the pillow of Snow-White everyday.
When the queen went to her glass, she spoke to it, but to her surprise it replied in the same words as before. And Snow-White happily kept company with the dragon.
Then the blood ran cold in her heart with spite and malice to hear that Snow-White still lived; and she wrote a secret letter to the prince who cursed the dragon, so as to break the happiness that the dragon and Snow-White had.
After reading the letter, the prince immersed in the charm of Snow-White that the queen described. So he rode his horse to attack the dragon, intending to snatch Snow-White away. When he arrived at the feet of the mountain, the prince cursed the dragon again. Meanwhile, the dragon suddenly lost his senses, rushing out of the cave.
The prince and the dragon fought violently, until the prince cannot resist the fierce attack of the dragon. Then he threatened to kill Snow-White. At that moment, the dragon recovered consciousness because of the worry about his beloved Snow-White.
When the sword of the prince impaled the chest of the dragon, Snow-White tried his best to pull out the knife that the dragon made by hands for her, and gave the prince a deadly strike. She ran to the dragon, crying loudly, “Why you sacrificed yourself to save me? You will die!”
“Because you are the purest girl I have ever met. I like you without reasons.” The dragon said in a weak voice.
However, the fog gradually disappeared. The warm sunlight irradiated the body of the dragon. Soon, the wings and the horns faded out until they disappeared. Instead of the black dragon, a boy with golden hair and sea-green eyes was insight. He wiped Snow-White’s tears, and told her gently, “I will not leave you alone. I’m back.”
Indeed, when the dragon sacrificed himself to protect the beloved ones, the curse will be removed.

But one day, as the queen was walking by the side of the river,a little fish lifted its head out of the water, and said, “Your wish shall be fulfilled, and you shall soon have a daughter.”
What the little fish had foretold soon came to pass;and the queen had a little girl who was so very beautiful that the king could not cease looking on her for joy, and determined to hold a great feast. So he invited not only his relations, friends, and neighbors, but also all the fairies, that they might be kind and good to his little daughter. Now there were thirteen fairies in his kingdom, and he had only twelve golden dishes for them to eat out of, so that he was fallen into a dilemma.
The king was obliged to leave one of the fairies without an invitation. But before he give the invitation, a troubadour came to the palace. Everyday, the troubadour sang the same song, which described the feast without the last fairy.
’ The rest came, and after the feast was over they gave all their best gifts to the little princess; one gave her virtue, another beauty, another riches, and so on till she had all that was excellent in the world. When eleven had done blessing her, the thirteenth, who had not been invited, and was very angry on that account, came in, and determined to take her revenge. So she cried out, “The king’s daughter shall in her fifteenth year be wounded by a spindle, and fall down dead.” Then the twelfth, who had not yet given her gift, came forward and said that the bad wish must be fulfilled, but that she could soften it, and that the king’s daughter should not die, but fall asleep for a hundred years.’
The king was afraid of what song predicted, so he asked the soldiers bring the troubadour to him. The troubadour was frightened, he told the king the song was created by the elfish in the east. What’s more, he was asked to sing the song near the palace until he met the king. The king got to know that the elfish could offer the thirteenth golden dishes. Ecstatically, the king sent the bravest knight to pick the elfish and the last golden dishes.
Unexpectedly, the troubadour prevent the king. Smaller and smaller, the troubadour turned into a small elfish and his bag turned into golden dishes. The elfish smiled and said if the king just take the golden dishes without inviting him, he would lose the golden dishes forever.

  19. THE THIEF AND THE INNKEEPER
A thief hired a room at an inn and stayed there some days on the lookout for something to steal. No opportunity, how-A ever, presented itself, till one day, when there was a festival to be celebrated, the innkeeper appeared in a fine new coat and sat down before the door of the inn for an airing. The thief no sooner set eyes upon the coat than he longed to get possession of it. There was no business doing, so he went and took a seat by the side of the innkeeper and began talking to him. They conversed together for some time, and then the thief suddenly yawned and howled like a wolf. The innkeeper asked him in some concern what ailed him. The thief replied, “I will tell you about myself, sir, but first I must beg you to take charge of my clothes for me, for I intend to leave them with you. Why I have these fits of yawning I cannot tell. Maybe they are sent as a punishment for my misdeeds; but, whatever the reason, the facts are that when I have yawned three times I become a ravening wolf and fly at men’s throats.” As he finished speaking he yawned a second time and howled again as before. The innkeeper, not believing any word he said, pretended to be terrified at the prospect of being confronted with a wolf, got up hastily and started to run indoors. The thief quickly went indoor after the innkeeper, but as he got into the room, a man hiding behind the door beat down the thief. And the innkeeper turn back, beginning to undressing the thief with the another man, saying : ”don’t worry, we will take good care of your clothes. ” At that time, it was the thief that was terrified ,lying on the ground and almost nude. Then, the innkeeper took out a shotgun from a box, saying : ” don’t worry, we will take good care of you after you turn into a wolf. ” And began to load bullets into the shotgun. The thief, now, was too terrified that he almost peed, and as the man relaxed his grip on him, he quickly ran out of the inn with only his underwear and never look back. Then, the innkeeper said:” Another stupid guy. ” And began laughing with his partner.

  20. the Rabbit And the Tortoise
A long time ago, there was an argument between the Tortoise and the Hare. They both said that they could run faster than each other. So, they decide to race each other. Once the route was established, they began to run. The rabbit lunged forward and took the lead. Seeing the tortoise far behind, the Hare thought he should rest under the tree. So he sat down under the tree and soon fell asleep. The tortoise slowly overtook him and completed the race, becoming the undisputed champion. Then the rabbit woke up and found he had lost.
A few years after the race, the hare felt it a shame to be defeated by a tortoise.During the years,he had been trying hard to practice his ability to run.The tortoise accepted his invitation with alacrity.Once the race began, the hare rushed out as an arrow. He remembered how he lost the game last time. And he hold back the desire to sleep when he past every tree. But because he didn’t examine the route carefully before the race, at a fork in the road, the rabbit ran the wrong way. When he ran for a long time did not see the finish line before he realized, but then the tortoise has reached the finish line before him, the rabbit again lost the race.
Rabbit finally realized that the person who had been holding him back from winning was himself. He was willing to overcome himself and make preparations to win the final victory. But when the starting gun rang, the rabbit immediately pulled up its legs and rushed forward, while the turtle stretched out its legs, “wheezing …” A gust of wind passed, “The turtle is gone!” Animals shouted. The rabbit was almost at the end, but he looked forward and was taken aback. Turns out the turtle is waiting for him at the end.
It ’s time to award the prize. The turtle is standing on the podium and is preparing to receive the prize. It jumps up in cheers. Suddenly, there was something “popped” on the ground. The audience cast their eyes on it. There was a rocket there. They said, “You cheated!” They caught him and called the police. After a while, the sheriff came and caught the turtle in the police car.
“You’re the one who should own it.”The Prize-giving officer said.

  21. Happy Little Match Girl —adapted from the little match girl
Once upon a time , a little girl tried to make a living by selling matches in the street.
It was New Year’s Eve and the snowclad streets were deserted. The little girl’s fingers were stiff with cold. If only she could light a match! But there were one match left. The little girl lit the last match.
“I just die for going home quickly.” She thought. But when she thought of her father, thought of his angry looking and his waving fist. She couldn’t help trembling.
“Chi” The match emitted ablaze light and strong heat. In its light, her grandmother was watching amiably. The little girl held her empty match box more tightly, with sorrowful tears climbing down her cheeks.
“How warm my grandmother’s embrace is! If only I could go to heaven to look for her and leave this cold world. Maybe it is I who am my father’s burdensome.” She stared at her match box, with head thinking.
“Don’t leave me alone, please grandma”She begged.
Her grandmother took the matchbox from the little girl and quickly turned around. The matchbox glistened brightly in her grandma’s hands.
“This is my gift for you which will give you what you want most. Remember don’t open it until then. “said the grandmother.
No sooner had he said that than the fire died down and grandmother’s figure disappeared in the faint light, and the matchbox faded and became very common.
The little girl looked at her treasure through her tears. She wanted to go home, but she dare not. A large house decorated
with glass ,lights, Christmas tree, stove, brightened her eyes. She swallowed hard, held up the matchbox, “roast goose, heater, Christmas”she murdered and closed her eyes. But when she opened her eyes, there was nothing.
She walked on the bridge lonely, with the wind blowing so hard that she didn’t even notice the red scarf which grandma gave her had been blown into the river.
Under an old, drafty bridge, the little girl sat down. She stared at the box in her hand, waiting for it to shine again. “Is this a treasure? But why can’t it give me what I want the most? Is grandma lied to me?”She crouched under the bridge, feeling colder and weaker.
In a daze, she heard a shout. Someone called her name whose voice sound like her father’s voice. The little girl wanted to run out, but fear made her shrink back into the hole. The cry outside became more and more urgent, and the father’s voice shouted sound a little hoarse. The little girl took the “treasure box” in the palm of her hand and came out, with bare feet.
Holding the wet red hood in his hand, her father hugged the little girl and held her tightly in his arms. Daddy’s arms are so warm!
“My grandma gave me this gift, saying it would make me get what I want most!” She held up the matchbox in her hand and showed it to her father happily.
Her father paid no attention to the humble matchbox. He saw his daughter’s red and swollen hands and feet.He gently bent over the body, carrying the little girl. The father and daughter walked on the way home, with snow fluttering. but leaning on the father’s back made the little girl feel not cold at all.
“I really got what I wanted the most! Thank you for the present, grandma!” She clutched the matchbox in her hand and thanked her grandmother in heaven.

  22. LITTLE ONE-EYE, TWO-EYES AND THREE-EYES(edited by Liyi) Monday 1~2
Once upon a time there was a Woman, who had three daughters, the eldest of whom was named One-Eye, because she had but a single eye, and that placed in the middle of her forehead; the second was called Two-Eyes, because she was like other mortals; and the third, Three- Eyes, because she had three eyes, and one of them in the centre of her forehead, like her eldest sister. But, because her second sister had nothing out of the common in her appearance, she was looked down upon by her sisters, and despised by her mother. “You are no better than common folk,” they would say to her; “you do not belong to us”; and then they would push her about, give her coarse clothing, and nothing to eat but their leavings, besides numerous other insults as occasion offered.
Once it happened that Two-Eyes had to go into the forest to tend the goat; and she went very hungry, because her sisters had given her very little to eat that morning. She sat down upon a hillock, and cried so much that her tears flowed almost like rivers out of her
eyes! By and by she looked up and saw a Woman standing by, who asked, “Why are you weeping, Two- Eyes?” “Because I have two eyes like ordinary people,” replied the maiden, “and therefore my mother and sisters dislike me, push me into corners, throw me their old clothes, and give me nothing to eat but what they leave. To-day they have given me so little that I am still hungry.” “Dry your eyes, then, now,” said the wise Woman; “I will tell you something which shall prevent you from being hungry again.
“The goat resembles the god of death, you know, you kill the goat ,and then you own the greatest power in the world.”sounds rediculous but temperated .”
The Two- Eyes trembling run the goat to the creep,”bye, little goat”,and pushed it over.
That night Two- Eyes went home with no goats. her mother hit her ass badly and bounce her to her bed.Two- Eyes finds the life so bitter that hopelessness get into the atmosphere of her family. In the midnight, the Two- Eyes went into her mother and sisters’ bedroom, and saw the soul of the goat flying around them.Suddenly, the sister of the Two- Eyes bounced up and said”who are you ,my sister”and then turned themselves to the oblation of the death—the blooding goat.

  24. The Golden Goose: the Disappearance of the Golden Goose

After the two sons were wounded, the youngest son, Dummerly, went out with little food. He also met the old man, and shared what he had with him. Surprisingly, the food was turned into a delicious meal, and when he chopped down the tree, a golden goose, which was lively and beautiful, came into his sight. He quickly took it in his arm and stroked its feathers over and over again. Before he returned home, Dummerly made a small cage and put the goose into it. He hid the cage in a place where no one but he knew, and spent all his free time searching for businessmen who wanted to buy the goose.
The mother was pleased with Dummerly, and he naturally became the only man to cut wood for his family. As usual, he would meet the old man and share his food with him. As usual, he would be rewarded with a delicious meal. However, the old man never gave him invaluable things like the golden goose. Gradually, the little boy became colder and colder to the old man, and eventually he refused to give him any food. He said, ”since I can’t get enough return from you, I will never give you anything.”
One month later, a Chinese businessman paid a visit to Dummerly, promising him 5000 yuan to buy the golden goose. Hearing what he said, Dummerly’s eyes lit up and they made a deal without any hesitation. After three days, the businessman took thousands of money in exchange for the goose. Dummerly secretly led him to the place, and to his relief, the goose was still there. However, when he opened the cage, the golden goose, which was imprisoned for more than 30 days, turned into a beam of golden light, disappeared into the sky and never returned.
The boy was full of regret, but it was too late.
(I have posted my fairy tale last week but I didn’t leave my Chinese name,so I post it once again. )

  26. New Little Match Girl
She quickly wiped a large bunch of matches to keep Grandma. A large bunch of matches glowed as brightly as in the daytime. Grandma has never been so tall and beautiful as she is now. Grandma held the little girl in her arms.
The little girl opened her eyes and saw the pink bed curtain. Through the gap between the bed curtains, she saw the pink floor, the pink desk and the delicate pink dolls everywhere. Everything was as good as a pink dream. Then, she saw her hand outside the quilt, white and delicate, never suffering from snow and frostbite, never doing chores. “This is not me.”She thought in bewilderment. “Didn’t I go with grandma?”
    “Who are you?”
She heard a soft voice with fear in her mind, and she was shocked.
“I… I… ” Stuttering, she suddenly didn’t know how to answer.
“Ah, I see. You’re the little match girl.” Children’s emotions were always baffling. The fear in that voice disappeared and was replaced by surprise, curiosity and sympathy of a naive child. There was no fear of the abrupt appearance of a stranger, no embarrassment between two strangers. The two little girls soon began a heated dialogue, and quickly established a pure and beautiful friendship.
“I know what you want. My dear friend, I will surely fulfill your wish. ” With the same body, they felt the warmth of the winter stove. With the same hands, they held up the fragrant roast goose. With the same beautiful eyes, they enjoyed the beautiful Christmas tree. Under the Christmas tree, in the same body, two different voices told the same wish.
The time together seemed to be very long while it seemed to be very short meanwhile. But the match girl clearly found that another voice was getting weaker and weaker, while her control of her body was increasing day by day. She knew that she had stayed too long. She said in the softest voice, gently striking the match in her hand. “Thank you, my little princess. I’m going to see my grandmother. “The bright fire lit up the darkness inside the house, and a star fell outside in the meantime.
The next morning, the little girl sat in the corner with red cheeks and a smile on her mouth. The girl in the pink princess dress took her mother by the hand and passed by the little match girl. With tears running down her face uncontrollably, she turned to her mother. “Mum, dress her in the most beautiful dress and send her back to heaven.”

  27. The Little Mermaid-All unworthy
‘It is you,’ said the prince, ‘you who saved me when I lay almost lifeless on the beach?’ and he clasped his blushing bride to his heart. ‘Oh! I am too happy!’ he exclaimed to the little mermaid. ‘A greater joy than I had dared to hope for has come to pass. You will rejoice at my joy, for you love me better than anyone.’
Then the little mermaid kissed his hand, trembling, and felt as if her heart were broken already.
His wedding morn would bring death to her and change her to foam.
Amidst the swinging of censers by the priests, the bride and bridegroom joined hands and received the bishop’s blessing. The little mermaid dressed in silk and gold stood holding the bride’s train, but her ears were deaf to the festal strains, her eyes saw nothing of the scared ceremony, she was thinking of her coming death and of all that she had lost in this world and all the pains that this world of human beings, which she once so keenly yearned for, had brought to her. When love had turned into foam, she would soon turn into foam. What left with her? Suddenly, a gust of hatred welled up in her heart. Only that, she did not know who to hate. No, not her beloved prince, nor the innocent bride or the lovely land. Maybe herself? No, she could not figure it out.
At dusk lanterns of many colours were lighted and the sailors danced merrily on deck. The little mermaid could not help thinking of the first time she came up from the sea and saw the same splendor and gaiety. ‘Were all these worth?’ She began to ask herself. Why bother? It would be the last night that she would breathe the same air as he. She now threw herself among the dancers, whirling never dancing so divinely. She did not feel the pain in her feet.
After all became hushed and still, she laid her arms on the gunwale and looked for the pink tinted dawn; the first sunbeam, she knew would be her death. Then she saw her sisters rise from the water, pale as she was, with their beautiful long hair being cut off.
‘We have given it to the witch to obtain the witch’s help, so that you may not die tonight! You must plunge this knife into the prince’s heart before sunrise. Our grandmother is so full of grief that she fell seriously ill and is about to die! She only wishes she can see you again!’ saying this they heaved a wondrous deep sigh and sank among the waves.
Were all these worth? Were all these worth?
But how much she loved him!
The little mermaid drew aside the purple curtain from the tent and looked at the beautiful bride asleep with her head on the prince’s breast.
    Were all these worth it?
Oh, how much she hated him! She stepped closer to them, trembling with the knife in her hands. Suddenly the pain in her feet seemed a thousand times painful now. Grandma’s face appeared before her eyes, calling her name in great suffering. ‘No! It’s not worth!’ cried out the little mermaid. She lifted the knife and plunged it straightly into the prince’s heart with tears flowing. The bride was awakened, screaming when she saw what was happening in front of her. Then the guard rushed into the room in great shocking and stabbed the little mermaid immediately. The little mermaid, whose tail had just grown back, therefore fell onto the prince’s body, dead.
    It’s not worth.

  28. NEW LITTLE SNOW WHITE

It was in the middle of winter, when the broad flakes of snow were falling around, that a certain queen who wore a delicate crown sat working at her window, the frame of which was made of fine black ebony; and, as she was looking out upon the snow, she pricked her finger, and three drops of blood fell upon it. Then she gazed thoughtfully down on the red drops which sprinkled the white snow and said, “Would that my little daughter may be as white as that snow, as red as the blood, as black as the ebony window-frame, and most importantly, as powerful as me!” And so the little girl grew up; her skin was as white as snow, her cheeks as rosy as blood, her hair as black as ebony, and everyone believed that she would be the next queen; and she was called Snow White.
But this queen died unexpectedly and no one knew why. Then news came that her husband planned to usurp her place, which was a surprising message to everybody. On hearing this, the prime minister rushed to the palace and shouted to the mad man angrily, “I have never heard of a man being king in history, and the leader of this country should always be a woman. You are a liar, a thief, a worm and you should back to where a man should go.” Meanwhile, the queen’s husband suppressed the anger in his heart and said slowly, “ Why are we men are born to be lower than you women, we have had enough of this oppression. We also have the right to rule the country, and what we want is just gender equality and freedom.” All the men got thrilled and rushed up to kill her.
At last the man became the first king in this country of all time. There were rumors in the folk that it’s he who poisoned the queen. But this suspicion was soon overshadowed by the advocacy for gender equality. Every people, especially the men, feel encouraged under the influence of the new king. It is such a remarkable revolution that everyone accepted this ridiculous fact in silence, except Snow White, the person who should had become a queen.
One day the king got a magical-looking glass from an old witch who claimed that this glass knew everything in the land and never lied, to which he went and gazed upon himself in it, and said, “Tell me, glass, tell me true! Of all the people in the land, who is the most powerful? Tell me who? ” And the glass answered, “You, king, was most powerful in the land. But Snow White deserves more; and when she was sixteen years old, she will be more powerful than you.” When the king heard this he turned pale with rage, and calling to one of his servants said, “Take Snow White away into the wide wood, that I may never see her more.” Then the servant asked with doubt, “but she is your daughter, my lord.” But the king said fiercely with red eyes, “I don’t have any daughter. Do it in a hurry, for the equality and freedom.”
Then the servant led the girl away, but his legs trembled when she begged him to spare her life, and he said, “I will not hurt you, my little queen.” Then he left her there alone, and though he thought it most likely that the wild beasts would tear her to pieces, he felt as if a great weight were taken off his heart when he had made up his mind not to kill her by himself, but leave her to her fate. He thought to himself, “Oh my lord, I don’t mean to cheat you, but I can’t forget who am I.”
Then poor Snow-White wandered helplessly along through the wood in great fear, and the wild beasts roared around. She leaned on an old tree in fear and wept sadly. We don’t know how long it took before she stopped crying and looked at the body of a dead cow next to her, and said, “I will definitely take back what was supposed to belong to me and torture the men to death.” So she walked to ask for help. One day evening she came across seven little dwarfs who were actually spies of another country. One of them recognized Snow White and then they took her to the palace of their country, where Snow White met the queen of country and told her what had happened.” Hearing what Snow White said, the queen got her hair up angrily and screamed, “ What a humble reptile he is! It’s such a ridiculous story that a man is delusional about dominating a country. I will help you, my little queen. I will help you regain the throne, in exchange you only need to give me 10 cities and 1000 slaves. Let’s fight for our pride.” Snow White smiled happily and thanked the kind queen a lot.
The king, now that he thought Snow-White was dead, believed that he was certainly the most powerful in the land, so he went to her glass and said, “Tell me, glass, tell me true! Of all the people in the land, Who is the most powerful? tell me who?” And the glass answered, ” You, king, is the most powerful in all this land. But soon, when Snow White take the army back, she will take all your glory.” Then the king was very much alarmed, for he believe that the glass always spoke the truth, and he was sure that the servant had betrayed him.
In response to the war, the king called up the army and gave an impassioned speech, “ Now here comes the conservative rats, with a rancid smell of the last century. But look at the warriors standing in front of me. You are the pioneers of the revolution, the founder of the civilization, the portrayer of the future. Let the group of feminist supremacy roll into hell. Let us salute an era of equality between men and women. Let’s fight for the equality and freedom.” Then a huge war started.
A month later, the war ended. The king’s army killed all the soldiers in the opponent and captured their queen. And he executed Snow White on crime of treason. After the war, the king’s land doubled and people cheered for their king crazily. The celebration lasted a month.
After everything is done, the king went back to his palace, with excited light in his eyes. He waved his sword and broke the glass, making a weird laugh like a crow. Carefully wiping the delicate crown, he smiled and murmured, “ Fuck the equality. I just want the throne.”

Little Ida’s Flowers: Li Hua’s Books

    Notes
Adapted from Little Ida’s Flowers in Fairytales from Hans Christian Andersen’s.
Modern Setting. Inspired by my six-year-old cousin who had to replace his fairytale books with math and English training guides in order to prepare for a kindergarten entrance examination, and his parents.

    Text
When he was enjoying his time at home, Li hua kept many colorful books about science fiction, fairytale and those silly things useless for answering questions printed on papers. But one day, when he got up three months before his exam for kindergarten entrance, he found there was nothing on his beloved bookshelf.
“My poor books disappeared,” said Li hua, “they were on the shelf yesterday evening, and now all the books disappeared completely. What do they do that for,” he asked, of his parents who sat on the sofa; he loved them very much, they could tell the most amusing stories, and cooked the most delicious and nutrient noodles; dumplings, and stir-fired shredded pork with chili sauce, fish in brown sauce, as well as bone broth; they are delightful parents. “Why did the books disappear?” he asked again, and pointed to his bookshelf, which was quite empty.
“Don’t you know what is the matter with them?” said the father. “The books were at a ball last night, and therefore, it is no wonder they are hiding for a nap.”
“But books cannot dance?” cried Li Hua.
“Yes indeed, they can,” replied the mother. “When it grows dark, and everybody is asleep, they jump about quite merrily. They have a ball almost every night.”
“Can children go to these balls?”
“No,” said the parents, “they don’t welcome children who will soon have an exam to enter the kindergarten.”
“Where do the books dance?” asked Li Hua.
“Have you not seen the faraway library in our city center, where Grandpa Li lives as a guard, and where the beautiful shelves are full of books? And have you not gone there once a month? Well, the books have capital balls in our home, now they go back to the library. Believe us.”
“I was in the library last month with mom,” said the innocent child, “All the shelves were full of books, but there was not a single book of mine. Where are they? I used to see so many last night.”
“They are in the library,” replied the mother. “You must know that as soon as you are going to sleep in your bed, the books run out of our home into the library, and you should see how merry they are now.”
“Oh how capital,” said Li Hua, clapping his hands. “Should I be able to see these books?”
“Yes,” said the father, with a hesitation, “mind you think of it the next time you sleep, no doubt you will see them, if you peep through the window. I did so to-day, and I saw a cartoon book lying stretched out on the sofa. She was a court lady.”
“But how can one book tell another? Books cannot speak?”
“No, certainly not,” replied the student; “but they can make signs. Have you not often seen that when the wind blows they nod at one another, and rustle all their paper pages?”
“Can the teachers in kindergarten understand the signs?” asked Li Hua.
“Yes, to be sure they can. It is important for you to be prepared for the examination so as to meet those who can understand the signs.”
“Oh how funny!” said Li Hua, and he laughed.
But to Li Hua, all these stories which his parents told him about the books, seemed very droll, and he thought over them a great deal. The books did disappear, because they had been dancing all night, and were very tired, and most likely they were ill. “The poor books are ill, and they must lie in their library, then perhaps they will get well again.” So he took the math and English exercise papers out as his parents’ request.
That night, he found that he crept out of his little bed, went softly to the door and looked into the room. Oh what a splendid sight there was to be sure! There was no night-lamp lighting up the room, but the room appeared quite light, for the moon shone through the window upon the floor, and made it almost like day. All the science fictions and fairytales stood in two long rows down the room, not a single book remained on the shelf, and the drawers were all empty. The books were dancing gracefully on the floor, making turns and holding each other by their pages as they swung round.
A number of books danced in. Li Hua could not imagine where they could come from, unless they were the books from the library. First came two lovely recipes, with golden egg puffs painted on their covers; these were irresistable desserts. Beautiful fairytales and science fictions followed, bowing to every one present. They had also music with them. Andersen’s and Verne’s children all danced together, and kissed each other. It was very beautiful to behold.
Next morning Li Hua woke up, only to be greeted with empty bookshelf and textbooks for him to read. Then he whispered to his bookshelf quite softly, “I know you are going to a ball to-night.”
